Senior Summer: Grand Project

It’s officially July! Not only is one month of the summer gone but also half of the year. Freaking out yet?

Don’t. You still have plenty of time.

One of the things to work on this summer is a grand project.

(A M Montgomery 2015)

It stems from an idea in Cal Newport’s How to Win at College, which advises students to always be working on some grand project. While I don’t agree with all of his advice in the book (like “Never Nap,” seriously?) or even one of his other books So Good They Can’t Ignore You, I am still eternally grateful for the guidelines in How to Become a Straight-A Student. Plus, this idea (and yes, a few others in How to Win at Collegeare good advice.

On Cal Newport’s Study Hacks blog (a valuable source), he lists some examples of grand projects such as writing a screenplay and starting a company, etc.

Once you decide what topic you’d like to do, he advises reaching out to those who were successful at this before you. Then making a 30-day timeline, identifying the amount of work you can get done, then repeating every thirty days.

But how do you know when you’ve truly landed a worthy grand project idea?

A Grand Project is any project that when explained to someone for the first time is likely to elicit a response of “wow!’

You’ve still got time this summer to start one! I’ll be working on mine for the rest of this summer too and as such, I won’t have anymore shows or books tallied on the blog for the rest of the summer. Wish me luck!

Season Caught Up/ Series Complete: Scandal

(There are no words…except does Olivia Pope have stock in a white clothing company?)

Book Read: City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare

(I finished reading the book four days ago and I’m still in awe. It was so good and painful and just–The Mortal Instruments series is over and since I’ve been reading these books since high school, it feels like the end of an era too.)
